Tour proceeds fund the restoration and preservation of Virginia’s historic gardens, and supply graduate degree research fellowships for building comprehensive and ongoing records of historic gardens and landscapes within the Commonwealth, and help the mission of the Garden Club of Virginia. Of specific interest to overseas guests are the Protea garden – a showcase of these other-worldly vegetation – and the world devoted to Restio grasses, big swathes of them in their characteristic deep greens and browns. This is a garden of illusion, occupying barely an acre however giving an impression of depth, breadth and top. Set in a picturesque location, the gardens are organic and include an excellent borders, a walled garden, fruit timber, spring-flowering meadows and flamboyant peacocks.
